HONOLULU (HI Now) - Some people say that the eyes are the window to the soul. Well, the mouth can be similarly considered a window into your overall health. The health of your teeth and gums affect what you can eat. And what you eat has a direct impact on your health, especially if you have a health condition like diabetes or high blood pressure.

We used to think that losing your teeth was inevitable with aging, but as we learn more about healthy aging, we are finding out that there are ways to maintain your teeth and gums in good condition for a long time. The key is seeing your dentist regularly and more importantly, don’t forget to brush AND floss your teeth every day.

HMSA’s dental program is called Oral Health for Total Health. This program provides extra dental benefits, such as extra cleanings and fluoride treatments, for people who have certain medical conditions. There is no additional cost when you visit a participating dentist. These extra services improve health outcomes and at HMSA, we believe in programs that our members healthy.

You’re automatically enrolled in the program if you have both an HMSA medical and dental plan and have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, or end-stage renal disease.

If you only have an HMSA dental plan, you can easily self-enroll online at hmsadental.com/total-health.
